UC Irvine teams construct their "green" dream homes
Two UC Irvine teams impressed this fall at the Orange County Sustainability Decathlon. The luminOCity home – inspired by the idea of metamorphosis with a roof reaching up to the sky like a butterfly’s wings – was designed and built by teamMADE, a group of students, faculty and staff from UC Irvine and Orange Coast College. The project placed second overall out of entries by 14 teams. Team LUCID, a second UCI group made up of undergraduate and graduate students in UCI’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, featured a concrete net-zero home that tied for first place in energy efficiency. “There are multiple human, social, economic and environmental factors associated with sustainability and resilience. The future of housing, especially in California, must consider these factors."
